British and American: Specific Target of Mumbai Attacks

A British man has told of the awful moment terrorist gunfire erupted around him as he sat in a hotel restaurant in Mumbai.

Alex Chamberlain managed to escape the Oberoi hotel alive as other people in his group were shot at.

Gunmen stormed the building last night as part of a wave of organised attacks on targets across the city well known for their popularity with tourists.

He told Sky News how he was in a group of people ushered into the restaurant's kitchen as one of the waiters was shot in the arm. The group of about 30-40 people were then "marched up like sheep" by a "young guy with a sub-machine gun, who was about 22-23".

The gunman told people to stop walking and put their hands in the air. The attacker then asked if any of the people were British or Americans.

Chamberlain said: "My Indian friend told me 'don't be a hero' and tell him you're Italian and that kind of stuff'."

Incredibly, the Briton and another person managed to sneak out of a fire door "without the gunman seeing us", where they stayed for about 15 minutes.

Chamberlen said: "I phoned my girlfriend and told her I loved her and thought it would be the last time I would talk to anyone."

He then walked "slowly downstairs expecting to see somebody with a gun around the corner" but they had gone.

Chamberlen said he walked into the lobby and when he came out into the street there were about 20 police officers there "looking just as scared as any of us" and a few fire engines.

He called the attacks "the ugly face of Islamic fundamentalism" because of the "language and venom in which people were asked if they were American or British".

The Briton, who works for Indian Premier League cricket, said: "They were talking about Britons and Americans specifically".

Teams of gunmen stormed luxury hotels, a popular restaurant, a crowded train station and a Jewish center, killing at least 101 people and holding Westerners hostage in coordinated attacks on India's commercial center that were blamed on Muslim militants. Dozens of people were still trapped or held captive Thursday.

Police and gunmen were exchanging occasional gunfire at two luxury hotels and dozens of people were believed held hostage or trapped inside the besieged buildings. Pradeep Indulkar, a senior official at the Maharashtra state Home Ministry said 101 people were killed and 314 injured.

Among the dead were at least one Australian, Japanese and British national he said. Officials said eight militants had also been killed in the coordinated attacks on at least 10 sites that began around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Officials at Bombay Hospital, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a Japanese man had died there and nine Europeans had been admitted, three of them in critical condition with gunshots. All had come from the Taj Mahal, the officials said.

The attackers specifically targeted Britons and Americans at the hotels and restaurant, witnesses said.

Alex Chamberlain, a British citizen who was dining at the Oberoi, told Sky News television that a gunman ushered 30 to 40 people from the restaurant into a stairway and, speaking in Hindi or Urdu, ordered everyone to put up their hands. "They were talking about British and Americans specifically. There was an Italian guy, who, you know, they said: 'Where are you from?" and he said he's from Italy and they said 'fine' and they left him alone. And I thought: 'Fine, they're going to shoot me if they ask me anything — and thank God they didn't," he said. Chamberlain said he managed to slip away as the patrons were forced to walk up stairs, but he thought much of the group was being held hostage.

Since May a militant group calling itself the Indian Mujahideen has taken credit for a string of blasts that killed more than 130 people. The most recent was in September, when explosions struck a park and crowded shopping areas in the capital, New Delhi, killing 21 people and wounding about 100.

Who was the first to use the internet? A very basic question isn't it? This question got my interest and I have tried to research for the answer.

There are millions of internet users now around the world but do we know how internet was invented and who was the first to use the internet.

The Internet was the result of some visionary thinking by people in the early 1960s who saw great potential value in allowing computers to share information on research and development in scientific and military fields. J.C.R. Licklider of MIT, first proposed a global network of computers in 1962, and moved over to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in late 1962 to head the work to develop it. Leonard Kleinrock of MIT and later UCLA developed the theory of packet switching, which was to form the basis of Internet connections. Lawrence Roberts of MIT connected a Massachusetts computer with a California computer in 1965 over dial-up telephone lines. It showed the feasibility of wide area networking, but also showed that the telephone line's circuit switching was inadequate. Kleinrock's packet switching theory was confirmed. Roberts moved over to DARPA in 1966 and developed his plan for ARPANET.These visionaries and many more left unnamed here are the real founders of internet.

The Internet, then known as ARPANET, was brought online in 1969 under a contract let by the renamed Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) which initially connected four major computers at universities in the southwestern US (UCLA, Stanford Research Institute, UCSB, and the University of Utah). The contract was carried out by BBN of Cambridge, MA under Bob Kahn and went online in December 1969. By June 1970, MIT, Harvard, BBN, and Systems Development Corp (SDC) in Santa Monica, Cal. were added. By January 1971, Stanford, MIT's Lincoln Labs, Carnegie-Mellon, and Case-Western Reserve U were added. In months to come, NASA/Ames, Mitre, Burroughs, RAND, and the U of Illinois plugged in. After that, there were far too many to keep listing here.

An eminent economist warned yesterday that the world had already slipped into recession, but said the Gulf countries would remain positive. Is it true?

The GCC states have large dollar surpluses so they do not need investment inflows. The banking system here (barring a big Kuwaiti bank which had failed) is safe, said Dr Adhip Chaudhuri, professor of economics at Georgetown University.

Delivering a talk on ‘Globalisation of the Financial Crisis’ at the Texas A&M University at the Education City here, Chaudhuri said: “A deep global recession is not only unpreventable, it is already on. The situation is going to be ugly, particularly as the US economy is likely to be hit hard in the days to come.”

The Gulf region, Chaudhuri said, was going to remain positive due to large dollar surpluses.

The SM Group is teaming up with Generali Pilipinas, the local insurer of Italy’s Assicurazioni Generali, the world’s fourth biggest insurance group, and the Kuok Group of Malaysian to bid for Philamlife. Generali Pilipinas is a joint venture between the SM Group and the Generali Group and the Kuok Group.

Jose T. Sio, executive vice-president of SM Investments Corp., said acquiring AIG’s assets would further fortify Generali Pilipinas’ strong position in the insurance industry. The SM group owns 40 percent of Generali Pilipinas.

The life insurance business in Philamlife is AIG’s crown jewel in the Philippines with a net worth of P21.4 billion as of end-2007. It has been the dominant market player in the Philippines over the last 60 years. Aside from the SM Group, other entities that have signified interest to acquire Philamlife include the Ayala Group, Metrobank Group, state pension fund Government Service Insurance System and San Miguel Corp.

Last Tuesday Philam asset Management Inc. (PAMI) announced that investments in the mutual fund companies under its wings are safe. They will not be affected by troubles facing by the company’s parent company, American International Group (AIG).

mutual fund companies are legal entities of their own and are required to get third-party custodians to handle the funds, acccording to Karen Liza M. Roa.With her telephone interview with Inquirer she explained that should AIG close its doors under a worst-case scenario, but the Mutual fund company itself will merely get a new fund manager.

Under Philippine laws, mutual fund companies have separate and independent members in the board of directors and are required to follow the investment restrictions of the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Philippine Investment Company Act. This includes the obligation to buy back any shares that its investors want to redeem.

PAMI is the second-biggest mutual fund management company in the Philippines, with around P19 billion assets under management.

American International Group, Inc. is a major American insurance corporation based at the American International Building in New York City. According to the 2008 Forbes Global 2000 list, AIG was the 18th-largest company in the world. But, the insurance business is all about risk and AIG seems to have had very little concept of the risk it held in its own businesses.

The job of an underwriter is to spread risk around. If you write earthquake insurance, you don't write it only in California as that could leave your entire business exposed to one terrible turn of events. AIG appeared to ignore that practice when making just such a dangerous bet on subprime mortgages.

They are already warned that mortgage defaults are spreading.Although acknowledging the "significant declines" in subprime securities, Chief Executive Martin Sullivan said AIG's tight underwriting standards had minimized losses and he was "poised to take advantage of opportunities" in the mortgage market.

An earthquake occured now in UAE at around 3:10 pm (Dubai Time). Dubai Police said the magnitude of the tremors was 4.99 on the Richter scale and the epicentre of the earthquake was South of Iran.

There was widespread panic in Dubai and parts of Northern Emirates as people feared an earthquake had hit the UAE.

The centre of the epicentre is 44 kms off Sharjah coast and the tremors in the UAE could have been after-shocks.

It was first felt in Sharjah and then spread to the other emirates. Civil Defence officials confirmed that they received several calls from residents in Bur Dubai, Deira, Fujairah and Sharjah. National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology are however investigating the earthquakeís magnitude.

Jamal Abdullah, director at the Earthquake Observatory in the American University of Sharjah (AUS), said, These tremors seem very similar to the ones experienced in November 2005. This is not new activity and could have been caused by the Zagrous fault that lies between the Arabian and Eurasian plates. Any movement in these plates could cause this

320kg Hashish Seizes in Qatar

There are increasing news of violence that is happening here in Qatar. We dont know what is the real reason but, with this news that was published by The Peninsula Qatar. A part of the question might be answered.

Qatari authorities have seized 320kg of hashish, thwarting "one of the biggest drug trafficking operations" in the state, the official QNA news agency said yesterday.

What is Hashish? Hashish is a preparation of cannabis composed of the compressed trichomes collected from the cannabis plant. It contains the same active ingredients but in higher concentrations than other parts of the plant such as the buds or the leaves. Psychoactive effects vary between types of hashish but are usually the same as those of other cannabis preparations such as marijuana.

In a joint effort between the anti-narcotics department and several security agencies, 120kg of hashish were seized during a raid on an undisclosed location and "a number of people were arrested," QNA said. Authorities also seized QR471,000 ($130,000) during the raid, the news agency added without specifying when it took place.

Does it mean that they are selling the hashish here in Qatar? It said the suspects detained in the raid confessed that there would be another attempt to smuggle drugs into the country by sea, leading authorities to intercept the boat carrying the drugs as it approached the coast on Monday.

He knows this because he himself was also a victim.

While walking at the riverbanks Josephine and Kulas were attacked by mud creatures that Diana had summoned. Kulas fought gallantly and was able to decimate the mud men by beckoning a whirlpool to melt down the mud creatures.He was deeply injured during the encounter and asks Josephine to take him to the seas in order to recover from his wounds.The two swam all night at the bottom of the ocean and it was a very memorable moment for Kulas who finally realized that Josephine cares for him.

Senator Pia Cayetano said in a statement that thirty-five percent of HIV and AIDS cases in the Philippines are from overseas Filipino workers.

Around 35 percent of our HIV cases have been traced to returning OFWs. Unfortunately, some of them come home bringing in not only their hard-earned dollars, but also the HIV they acquire from having unprotected sex abroad,” said the chairperson of the Senate committee on health and demography.

Cayetano said the rising number of cases of human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in the country should be a cause for concern for the Arroyo government.

Cayetano said that the Department of Health should not only focus on controlling the spread of documented local HIV/AIDS cases, but also how to prevent cases of HIV infection being caused by returning OFWs.

"The infected OFW unknowingly infects his wife, who in turn infects her baby once she gets pregnant," she explained.

Buendia's sister announced at the concert that the Eraserheads' frontman "is in a lot of physical and emotional stress lately."

On August 28, Buendia's mother passed away due to cardiac arrest. The Eraserheads vocalist decided to push through with the concert anyway.

THE Overseas Workers Welfare Administration in the Central Visayas (OWWA-7) is now accepting nominations to the 2008 Search for Model OFW Family of the Year Award (MOFYA).

The search aims to recognize the sacrifices and achievements done by overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families.

The award highlights the success of OFWs and their families in managing the impact of overseas employment in family life, and to exemplify their best practices toward optimizing the gains of migration.

Any organization, association or group can nominate either land-based or sea-based OFW head of the family.

The nominee must have a minimum of four years working experience abroad; have maintained constant positive communication with his/her family; must be an active member of Filipino civic organization/s; must have at least one family member who is successful in his/her profession and has shown successful management of family finances.

The winners from the land-based sector and sea-based sector will compete in the national finals

Because of the heavy traffic Kulas was unable to fetch Josephine but our Dyosa doesn’t want to hear any of Kulas’s excuses. Josephine told Kulas that the only way that she could ever forgive him is bring back the old Dyosa comics that her mother, has sold to the junk cart. Kulas seemed to face a very monumental task, so she asks for the help his fish friends. Kulas performed a magic spell which enabled the fishes to breath and swim outside the water and it didn’t take long before the fishes could bring back the comics. Josephine was very happy and rewarded Kulas, with a very sweet embrace.

At the office Sinukuan saw Josephine for the first time and couldn’t explain the joy that she had felt upon seeing the young lady. She even told her other sisters that she saw something’s special about Josephine.

After learning from Hiyas that medallion is missing, Amang Suga tries to get up from his sickbed and went on, to confront Magayon. He caught Magayon talking to Diana and learned that they’re plotting to kill the Takda and also discovered that Sinukuan was held captive by his eldest daughter. Suga’s spirit went at Sinukuan’s dungeon and sets his daughter free and then transported her to the mortal world, to search for the Takda. Meanwhile Adonis bought a huge stake of an events agency and demanded to bring to him all the beautiful girls ages 17-18Have you noticed the voice Sam milby (Adonis). He is using his real voice now.

The two Kasamian manananggals spotted Diana and snatched her into the air. Josephine sensed the commotion and quickly transforms into Dyosa Cielo to rescue Diana. Josephine succeeded warding-off the Kasamians and was able to rescue Diana. The two sisters came face-to-face for the time, with Diana being surprise to see a creature, as powerful as hers.

At that time, the witch is performing a hymn, using a mystical fountain to track down the face of the Takda and slowly, a silhouette of the Takda’s face began to appear in the water.

Josephine transformed into Dyosa Cielo and defeat the malignos. The mananangals then turned to Venus and Miong. Josephine was able to saved Venus but Miong was dropped by mananangals from the air. MORO Islamic Liberation Front rebels occupied a town in Lanao del Norte and attacked three other towns in the province and Iligan City yesterday, prompting the military leadership to order another round of offensives. Some of the civilian fatalities were used by the rebels as human shields while they were withdrawing. "The rebels killed them on their way out. That is the report given to us by the civilians," said Brig. Gen. Hilario Atendido, head of the AFP Task Force Tabak which is in charge of the Lanao provinces. He said most of the civilian casualties were from the Kolambugan and Linamon. He said some of the civilian fatalities were hostages taken by the MILF during the Kolambugan attack. AFP chief Gen. Alexander Yano said the attacks are a "virtual declaration of war" by the MILF and "a clear manifestation of the insincerity to the peace process of a significant portion of the MILF." "This was confirmed by Commander Bravo's declaration of jihad (holy war)," he said referring to the leader of the MILF forces that attacked Iligan City and the four towns. "It appears that several MILF sub-commanders are not controlled by the MILF leadership and are just using the peace process as a blanket to launch violent attacks against the people of Mindanao," he also said. MILF forces under Commander Umbra Kato last month forcibly occupied 15 barangays in North Cotabato. They were flushed out of the areas last week in four days of military offensives. The Maguindanao-based Kato reportedly had 500 to 800 men. MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu said the rebels actually pulled out of Kolambugan on the order of the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces, the armed wing of the MILF. "There is already a pullout upon command, upon orders of the leadership of the BIAF, MILF after several hours of trying to get in touch there (with fighters in Lanao). Apparently, they were reached because the command is for them to pull out from the area. Right now, the area is clear," he said. Kabalu said rebels occupied the town because of frustration over the slow progress of the peace process and because of agitations by some quarters that a peace accord with the MILF would not be fully implemented by the government. Zanjoe Marudo is starting to appear on the scene as a comics illustrator. Dyosa and Kasamians are appearing on his dream. Meanwhile,Josephine encountered a transformation that she did not expect. Will these things convince Josephine that she is indeed a "Dyosa"?

After seeing the kasamian evils coming out from the Tiara, Josephine is still in denial to accepts the task of being a Dyosa because of fears that she might lose her family. As Josephine returns home, she was horrified to see the Tiara in her room and thought that Bakus did it, but it was Kulas, who secretly took the Tiara from the river and put it to Josephine’s room.

At Kasamian, Adonis was secretly approached by a woman who knows his true identity as half Kabanua and half Kasamian. She gave him a magical potion that could hide his ugly appearance while he’s in the mortal world. The woman was about to tell the negative aspect of the potion but their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of Tadaklan.

Meanwhile, Agatha was walking her way home when she saw many "tiyanak" on the road. Josephine was also walking that way, and when the "tiyanak" saw her, Josephine beamed a bright light which scared them. This case make Agatha think that Josephine and her family are evil spirits too. Agatha and Josephine got a confrontation while Josephine is on duty which cause her to be terminated from the job.After getting fired from her job,Josephine asks Kulas not to take her home and leave her alone for a moment. While walking into a dark alley she encountered a group of guys who are trying to rape a girl and attempts to assault her. Josephine transforms into a centaur (Dyosa Tierra) and kick the asses of the muggers. As she runs to take some cover, a mystical creature come up to Josephine and introduced himself as a Lakan.

He gave her the crown called "Tiara" but will she accept it?

Magayon went back to Kasamian and asks Tadaklan to help her in finding her daughter Diana but the Kasamian ruler shows little interest.With no one to turn into, Magayon personally set off to the mortal world to find her daughter and it didn’t take long for her to locate Diana. Kulas show his real identity as "Gibot"to Venus.He invited Venus to swim underneath the sea but their supposed enjoyable swim below the water was interrupted by giant swordfish. Kulas got stabbed by the giant swordsfish's pointed nose. A school of fish help him and they brought Kulas into a undersea palace.A mysterious mermaid welcomes the Gibut and calls him by the name of "Barakula". Meanwhile after much pondering, Josephine is starting to consider if there’s any truth behind Bakus and Kulas’s claim that she’s a Dyosa.it was Bakus’s turn to convince Josephine to wear the Tiara and accept her duty as a Dyosa. Josephine in jest grabs the Tiara and as she was putting the crown in her head, Josephine all of a sudden throws the Tiara into the river. As the Tiara sank into the water, a big explosion soon followed and along with it, came the Kasamians -emerging from the Tiara, in great numbers.

Condo market is booming due to a significant increase of OFWs and retirees from around the world who are residing or considering residence in the Philippines according to Mike Mabutol, a director at CB Richard Ellis Philippines.

OFWs had long been a lucrative market for residential properties.Condominium developers plan to build a total of some 40,000 units over the next five years.

The data show 28 residential condominium buildings with a total of 18,000 units are expected to rise this year up to 2013 in Makati City plus 33 condo buildings totaling 11,500 units in the adjacent Fort Bonifacio Global City.

CBRE Philippines general manager Trent Frankum said that, Low interest rates and flexible financing terms—with mortgage rates at 8.5-12.0 percent—have helped boost the residential property sector

The company said another bright prospect for the market was the development and market positioning of retirement villages for expatriate “empty nesters.”

So far, the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines has made initial evaluation of potential attractive sites in Cebu province, Nasugbu town in Batangas province, Tagaytay City in Cavite, the province of Laguna, the northern resort city of Baguio, the Clark Freeport north of Manila, the Subic Bay Freeport northwest of Manila, and the northern city of Laoag.

"Philippine Information Agency Daily" News announced the scholarship program for OFW dependants. The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) will grant 100 scholarship slots to qualified dependents of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs)-Members. The applicant should be a beneficiary or a dependent of an OWWA member and is not more than 21 years of age. Preferably a high school graduate and passed the qualifying test conducted by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) National Examination and the College Admission Test where the applicant intends to enroll. The scholarship privileges under the Education for Development Scholarship Program include a cash assistance in the amount of P60,000.00 per year, while school fees will be directly paid to the school.The scholar is free to choose his or her desired field of study as long as the program is offered by a Commission on Higher Education (CHED)-accredited college or university. The OWWA representative said that the deadline of the filing of application will be on October 31, 2008 while the qualifying exam will be on December, this year. Brussels-Based OFW, Victim of Text Scam

It is sad to know that a fellow Filipino overseas worker based in Brussels, Belgium was duped of more than P90,000 by a syndicate allegedly engaged in text scam.

The victims name is Petronila Baal. He could not believe that she was victimized by a syndicate who used the names of some high-ranking Philippine officials. The suspects even used the name of our President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to carry out their illegal activity.

The text message she received read: "Congratulations! Your SIM number won cash prize from PCMC thru CPV electronic raffle. Call me up now for the mechanics to claim ur prize, I'm Ed Robles."

After receiving the message, Baal said she immediately contacted the suspect to ask him how she can claim her prize. After that, Baal sent money four times to the suspect through Western Union.

Meanwhile, the Philippine embassy in Brussels denied that government officials are involved in the scam. You may read the whole story in "abs-cbn news online".

These are the common expressions that we can hear from the wife of an Overseas Filipino Worker. This situation is very common in the life of typical Filifino family whose one of the parent is going abroad to give better future to their loved ones especially for their children. Why do we have to work away from our family? Is there no opportunities in the Philippines to fullfill our dreams? We know that working abroad is one way of fulfilling these dreams.Unfortunately, not all Overseas Filipino Workers are having the full beneficial returns. Some may be very lucky to have a very kind employer but some may not. Some can get the perfect job that they really wanted, others cannot. Some gets high paying jobs, some do not. Some contract worker have the opportunity to bring their families with them and sponsor them to have their own worker visa but some do not. Do we really have to battle illness alone in a foreign land without any member of our family to attend our needs and homesickness? In some cases foundation of family relationship becomes weak because of the physical distance that is built when one leaves home to work abroad. Children were not guided properly and wives need to survive a long distance relationship. Sometimes, both parents are working abroad and children would only be left under the guidance of one of their relatives; but sometimes the guardian cannot fully discipline them and it cause children to be stubborn. Long separation also creates gaps between the parents and children; closeness with each other is not firm or strong anymore. Inspite of these sacrifice we are still fighting to fullfill our dreams, to have a successful life. We can not resign from our jobs abroad because finding local jobs after working abroad is also a problem for the Ex-Overseas Filipino Workers. Some company are choosy and doesn't want to accept applicants whose job experience is outside Philippines. Companies are thinking that Ex-OFW are choosy with their jobs. You can be accepted in a local job sometimes, but the salary would not be the same as when working abroad. These are the reason why we are forced to leave the country , although we already like to stay at home for good….and so the cycle goes on. Can't we do something about this? Can't we just stay in the Philippines and earn a descent money to buy our needs? For the Overseas Filipino Worker, working abroad without saving extra income for their retirement years is one of the big mistakes that should be avoided. Some of the OFW are coming back to the Philippines without savings. Saving money for kids should be the goal of all OFW but unfortunately this is not the case for all. Filipino abroad should learn saving money techniques to prepare for their retirement. Once we learn this we will have the guts to stay in Philippines and to be with our family. What Is Meditation?Meditation focuses on maintaining quietness of our busy mind. The effect is to direct our concentration to one healing element – one sound, one word, one image, or one's breath. When our mind is "filled" with the feeling of calm and peace, it cannot take off on its own and worry, stress out or get depressed.The meditative state allows our nerves and tired muscles to relax, calm heart rates and ease blood pressure. The effect is so restful and peaceful that you will look forward to do it daily.

How Does Meditation Work?Studies have shown that meditation can bring about a healthy state of relaxation by causing a generalized reduction in multiple physiological and biochemical markers, such as deceased heart rate, decreased respiration rate, decreased plasma cortisol, decreased pulse rate and increased EEG alpha, a brain wave associated with relaxation. Our body gains a state of profound rest.During meditation, our blood pressure stays at "low level" but falls significantly for persons on medication with abnormally high levels of blood pressure.Meditation reduces activity in the nervous system. Through meditation we can learn to access the relaxation response and to be aware of the mind and the way our attitudes produce stress. In calming the mind, meditation can also put one in touch with the inner physician, allowing our body's own inner wisdom to be heard.

Meditation is part of my yoga practice. When I meditate, I feel my life changes for the better. It brings me peace of mind and I handle things better in life. I have the insights I want to solve problems and a clearer viewpoint even when I feel stressful. Through all these years of practicing meditation, I have been able to reap the positive influence on my life.How To Meditate Effectively?Ideally you should meditate in a quiet place, or a room with no distraction. Wear simple and comfortable clothes and remove your shoes when meditate. Try meditating in the same place every time because that will build up a calm meditative energy, making it easier each time to go within.

Guide to Meditation:-

1. Sit upright on your meditation mat with legs folded. You may find this rather uncomfortable at the start, but after a few attempts you will get use to it.

2. Straighten up your spine and close your eyes.

3. Using both your thumb and forefinger touching each other, place your hands on your knees, one on top of the other.

4. Take three full breaths through your nose, filling up your lower diaphragm and slowly letting it out, again through the nose.

5. Repeat your breath, always through the nose, feeling your breath go in and go out.

6. Feel your breath enter your body and where it goes inside, then feel it go out of your body again.

7. If your are distracted by a thought, gently bring back your mind to your breathing and start once more to feel the breathing, then the exhaling.

I personally feel that the best time for meditation is the quiet early morning hours – between 6 A.M. to 6.30 A.M. However some people may prefer to meditate in the evening before they go to bed. Contrary to that antiquated belief, a research study released in 2006 reveals that more than three out of four women said a new plasma TV trumps a diamond solitaire necklace. The study conducted by market research TRU for the Oxygen Network is cleverly titled Girls Gone Wired and has helped marketers gain insight into women and technology. Given the fact that women represent roughly half the U.S. population and influence more than 73% of all purchases in the consumer electronic category, they remain a largely underserved market.

There have been misconceptions that women are not technologically savvy or knowledgeable as men. In recent years, solid research has been able to debunk those beliefs and open the eyes of the consumer electronics industry. Oxygen’s research study found that both men and women spend a majority of their waking hours interfaced with technology, with women spending 15 hours per day and men spending 17. Both women and men rely most heavily on their computers and cell phones. Roughly the same amount of men and women said they use their cell phones weekly, but 73% of women said they use their computers weekly compared to 71% of men.

Oxygen’s study also offers research that shows businesses how they should market technology to women:

Don’t talk down to women about technology: 79% of women feel comfortable using technology and are not afraid of it. Sugar-coating tech language and using ‘female friendly’ colors won’t necessarily do the trick. Women view quality and technology itself more importantly than style.

Women prefer a hands-on approach to technology: 72% of women prefer playing with the device in order to learn how it works. Set up interactive tradeshow displays so participants can experience the product for themselves. This helps spark curiosity and encourages inquiry.

Technology is the problem-solver: Women look for the lifestyle benefits that come from technology and tend to purchase consumer electronics based on their practicality. The majority says that tech products are essential to helping them organize their busy school, work and social schedules. Portray products and services as the remedy to a problem.

Presents that impress: Whether a gift is for a sister, mom or girlfriend, nothing tops the list like technology. Remember that diamond necklace? That and other luxury items such as designer shoes and handbags are getting pushed aside to make room for plasma TVs, top-of-the- line cell phones, digital cameras and iPods. 83% of women said they get excited about receiving new tech items and over a third would buy tech items for themselves.
